"I want to make it abundantly clear that Engama is a place of learning." His dark eyes scanned the faces gathered in the great hall. "We are here to not only expand our physical skills and craftsmanship in whatever we are pursing, but our minds as well. You are here to expand your thoughts, open yourselves to new ideas and ways of seeing the world. There are many perspectives that are different from those you were born among, whether they are from a different part of Ela'yas, or further beyond to the ends of Alast. We can learn much from those who are different from us. They inform us just as much about our own nature as they do about the others we encounter. Mocking things that you do not know or understand is both small-minded and dangerous. You would all do well to remember that.
"I will not tolerate these vile, willful ignorance or mean-spirited actions among the students or staff here. Anyone else found guilty of harassing their fellows will feel the full weight of the consequences. I will not have it here."
Kenbin reached the building first, barely pausing to snatch the gun from the body that lay broken beside it. When Kith caught up the gun was pressed into his hands.
"Come on!"
There were four horses running northeast, only two had riders. They were smart enough to not leave the other horses behind. Kenbin cursed under his breath, running a distance before pausing and lifting his rifle.
One, two, three shots from Kenbin.
Kith struggled with the cocking mechanism.
"Just-" bullets zipped around them. Kenbin jumped back reflexively and threw up a barrier between them and the riders. He grabbed the rifle from Kenbin. "Lift, slide back, and push it forward and down again." He shoved the gun back in Kith's hands. Kenbin ran around the barrier with Kith at his heels.
"Stand and fight, you traitors!"
They both fired. One of the riders slumped and his horse stumbled under the sudden shift of weight. As it found its feet, it lost its rider.
Kenbin got off two more shots at the final rider and suddenly collapsed forward with an agonized cry, dropping his gun.
"Kenbin!" Kith went to the other's side.
Blood blossomed across Kenbin's upper thigh, but he grabbed his gun and shoved the butt of it into the ground. Kith reached out to help and Kenbin gripped firmly and stood. "Get a shield up, we can't leave him on the plain."
"You probably shouldn'-"
"Let's go, Kith," Kenbin let go and started hobbling towards where the rider had dropped.
Seeing that Kenbin was determined whether he helped or not, Kith did as he was told and held the shield while offering a shoulder for Kenbin to lean on. There were only a handful more shots aimed their way before the retreating rider put his full effort into getting away.
The man's face was bloodied from striking his head, but he also had a wound over his left hip.
"Is he dead?" Kenbin asked.
"I don't know. Should we move him?"
"Yeah, we need to get him closer to the building. We can't leave him out here, dead or alive."
They dragged him onto a sled and secured him before making their way slowly back to the building and leaving him beside the man Kenbin had taken the gun from. Kith dragged the other body over and they left the three of them together before they went to check on everyone else. It seemed like their last shooter was going to speed along his way as fast as possible away from them rather than coming back to try and finish the job. They picked up the two rifles from the dead rider and the other rooftop shooter.
