| Maly's drawing-tastic art survey |
| What is your favorite subject to draw? | Mammals generally, especially horses and (big) cats. |
| What is your most common choice in 2-d media? | pencil and ink |
| Anything you refuse to draw? | Sex |
| Real anatomy or cartoon physics? | Mostly real anatomy. |
| Which is more important - solid inking skills or solid color theory? | Ach, tough one. Probably inking skills due to my line-geek nature. |
| Photoshop or PSP? Illustrator or Painter? | Photoshop and Painter. Between those two, definately Painter. |
| Markers - Prismacolor or Tria? | I like my trias (all five of them . . . must get more) |
| Paints - oils, acrylics, or watercolors? | Gouache! Or watercolor. |
| Have you ever done a stippling project outside of art class? | Yes. It took me about 10 hours. |
| Ever imitate a popular style of art? (anime, disney, comic book...) | Yeah, mostly just when trying to draw a character that's already in said style. |
| How would you define your "style?" | My style is me. It's just how I view the world. It's not Animé, traditional Western, comic book, or any of those, it's just me. |
| What is one area of drawing that you need to improve in? | Perspective/foreshortening. |
| When did you start drawing as a hobby? (we all drew when we were little) | It really started in 9th grade. That's five years ago now. |
| What kind of sketchbook do you have? Brand? Size? How old is it? | I go through so many sketchbooks so fast I don't think it really matters. Usually I have a 8X10 or similar size plus a 6X9 (or similar) going at the same time. My favorite current sketchbook is an 8X8 Finesse Sketch magnetic sketchbook (keeps the page edges nice) started January. I'm also currently using a 9X12 Strathmore (Dec 03), a random 3X4 (Dec 02), a 4X6 (Apr), a 5X8 reserved for long trips (Jun 03), and a 11X14 Academe (Apr 01). That's not including the two that I got in Dec. '95 that I'm holding out on finishing until Dec '05. |
| How many sketchbooks have you had previous to this? | *Blink.* Erm . . . Thirty-something? |
| How many sketchbooks do you go through in a year? | It depends. At least two, sometimes more. |
| #2 yellow pencil or a clicky pencil? | Mec. pencil. I don't trust the yellow ones, lead inconsitancies. |
| What kind of eraser do you use? | One of those white clicky ones (usually) |
| Who are your artistic influences? | Too many to name? I'd actually like to get more into the style of traditional Chinese art. I love Al Hershfield's charactercures, Leslie Harrison has phenomenal equine and other animal art, and I am rather fond of several less famous people's work (read: many of those I stalk on online galleries). |
| What books would you reccomend to aspiring artists? | "Painting Animals That Touch the Heart" by Leslie Harrison I'd also reccomend "The Encyclopedia of Mammals" by David MacDonald (many, many gorgeous references) |
| Do you have any favorite online tutorial sites? | No, not really |
| What is the most money you've ever made on one drawing / illustration / painting? | $95.00, that was for the Garth drawing/illustration. |
| What do you hope to accomplish with your art? Do you want to go anywhere with it in life? | I'd like to show people things that they might miss otherwise. I'd like to express myself. As far as going somewhere with it, I plan on doing freelance illustration in the future. |
| Finally, why do you draw? | A little out of habit, a little out of the challenge, and to attempt to depict emotions that words don't quite describe. |
