Gwaaarrrrrg
Oct. 9th, 2003 05:29 pm*Just got home.*
Today does not feel like one day. It feels like three. One this morning, the second riding, the third trying to get Glory in the accursed trailer for THREE HOURS, and, okay, so it actually feels like four, the fourth being right now.
Between a bowl of Cream O' Wheat this morning around 5.30 and now I've had 1 powerbar 2L of water, and 2 cans of Hawaiian (if I could spell) punch. That's it. Surprisingly I'm not all that hungry and think I shall finish off the last 5 of Lance's ribs from Saturday. I am rather thirsty though.
Erm, yeah. Three hours trying to get Glory in the tailer. Anyone out there have any advise on how to get her in the tailer in a drastically shorter timespan? What we finally ended up doing was putting barrels right next to the ramp so she couldn't go left and right, then taking a long heavy-duty mountain climbing rope, tying it to her halter and then looping it through the D-ring at the front of the trailer twice. Pretty much just pulled her in and didn't let her back up an inch. Cody did that though, he's got a couple of inches and about 25 lbs on me.
So exhausted. I want to sleep. Oh, yeah, missed math for obvious reasons. Need to call the professor tomorrow or somethign and at least give him an explaination because I feel vaugely obligated to. Uuuu . . . food, right. Don't want to go to class tonight, I know I'lll just sleep through it. Curse it all, there's only two "l's" in I'll.

Date: 2003-10-10 06:54 am (UTC)First, the faster but less-effective method. It requires about two to three people...and yer gonna wanna do this when you have a number of hours to kill. Set someone in the trailer with a scoop of sweet feed. Have someone else lead the horse. Have the third person stand behind the horse with a longe whip. When she steps foreward at all, even to just go NEAR the trailer, praise and offer her a treat. If she moves a single foot backwards, tap her with the longe whip. I can almost guarantee that the first time she gets punished for not wanting to load, she'll flip out. But if you keep loading and then IMMEDIATELY unloading her in this way for a few hours, she'll get the idea. Going in the trailer, good, gets grain...going back when not asked to, bad, gets a spanking.
If you are willing to put a LOT of time and effort into it...you can do what a friend of mine did when her mini refused to get into a trailer. Just...don't feed her anywhere BUT the trailer. Every time she gets fed, put it in the trailer, and load her and make her eat in there. If she refuses three times in a row, put her back in her stall and then try again after a ten minute break. In a week or two, she'll be the one leading YOU into the trailer.
